Locals First
This is about more than an election. This is about creating a city that works for everyone. As a military combat veteran and one that still serves, I adhere to the Soldier’s Creed. Part of that creed says, “I will never leave a fallen comrade.” As Mayor, I will embody that principle and make sure that no community, neighborhood, or resident is left behind.
When we lift up diverse voices, we make our community a better place. Our local business community is a good place to start. We must ensure small business owners, the backbone of our local economy, can thrive 365 days a year.
There is a real risk of overdeveloping Charleston to the point that the city becomes unrecognizable. Our next mayor must balance our thriving tourism with keeping our city authentic and true to our residents and businesses.
Putting locals first also means taking care of our seniors. Charleston seniors should be able to age in place. We need to protect the history and culture of our city, and that wisdom is held by our elders.
As Mayor, I will:
Prevent displacement and increase community ownership of land, housing, and businesses
Partner with trusted local accountability partners that can help implement and measure our progress
Set aside space for local businesses in new development projects
Commission a report on city spending to identify a baseline for increasing opportunities for a more diverse business population
Commit to stabilization efforts in order to address the reality of life after gentrification
