Workforce Housing & Affordability

As our city grows, it’s vital that a strong servant leader is in place to ensure that this growth is sustainable and protects our current residents and our City’s rich history and culture.

At this point, livability is exclusive to a few and inconvenient for most in Charleston. Over 40 percent of families are struggling to keep a roof over their head, and we need to build over 16,000 affordably-priced housing units this decade. Addressing this requires investing in holistic solutions that create healthy communities for all.

We need affordable housing for all to prevent displacement and cover those at various stages of life. We need affordable housing options regardless of income in every community. Driving until you can afford a place to live is not sustainable.

Our people are our greatest assets. Incentives for public employees, guaranteed income, and living wages benefits everyone. I will aim higher in order to provide greater mobility and additional pathways so more dreams will become a reality and wealth is attained.

As Mayor, I will:

  • Increase the permit of affordable housing units by 25% annually

  • Update zoning ordinances regularly in order to meet our growing needs

  • Make upward mobility possible through city-wide apprenticeship programs

  • Take action to provide emergency support in the form of direct payments for household cost such as utilities, child care, or transportation

  • Create a land bank

  • Revitalize the first time homeowners program

  • Create and reserve a stock of affordable housing units for police officers, firefighters, teachers, EMTs, service workers, and other public employees

  • Improve the permit and approval process to cut down on cost and time

  • Partner with proven organizations to deepen and widen our collective impact

  • Create an ordinance to establish a first right of refusal for tenants and community based organizations
